Canon Point: Openbound Pt 3
World/Setting: N/A
History: LINK
Personality:
Troll society is engrained with a blood-color based hierarchical structure. Not only is Karkat far from the top of the pecking order, but his blood is entirely outside of the typical spectrum. This not only gives him the predicament of being low on the food chain, it cuts him off from the rest of his peers and he overcompensates for the disconnect. He forces advice on Tavros ("STOP PLAYING GAMES FOR GIRLS") and inserts himself into a great deal of other trolls' business. Karkat is also aggressively dismissive of the hemospectrum, refusing to type in his blood color out of apparent disregard for the system. Of course, later this is revealed to be an act of self-preservation as his blood color is revealed via a stab wound from SS.

Karkat's desire to lead the red team, and then subsequently his entire group of friends, through their session of SGRUB is another way for him to assert himself in a society that would inherently reject him. If he can bring his team to victory as the leader, he emerges on top, in control, and no longer a shitstain on the genetics of a great race. In accordance with Karkat's luck, it doesn't exactly work out that way. The team was nearly successful, completing each task and defeating each foe that the game laid out for them with relative ease. It was only at the end with a disastrous inter-dimensional incident that the trolls found themselves hiding for their lives. Karkat's nature is to blame himself for just about everything that could ever go wrong, but the fault of that particular extremely major problem more likely lays with Vriska and Bec.

With the amazing failure of the trolls to gain their reward for beating the game, Karkat's resolve stays strong, if directionless. He doesn't know what to do, but he's striving to keep the group unified and productive, so he orders the network aggression on John and his friends. Some go along with this, and some don't - even Karkat himself grows distracted from the original plan as he constructs a more elaborate solution with Jade.

Through his persistent 'trolling' of John and friends Karkat grew familiar with the human 'disease' of friendship. He's already friendly (if friendship were expressed through gross sex-ridden rants of derision) with most of the remaining trolls, but the word itself and the concept of more amicable behavior plants itself in his mind with his extended communication with John.

Friends, however, haven't always been good for Karkat. It isn't too long on the meteor until the shit hits the proverbial fan. Splatters all over the room. Just like the blood of his friends. With Eridan and Gamzee's murder streaks (along with Vriska and Terezi's killings) Karkat's leadership has undeniably fallen apart. Not only that, but his direct involvement with attempting to pacify Eridan ending in the death of Feferi and the blinding of Sollux begins the downward spiral of his confidence. He's clearly shaken and afraid during the events of murderstuck. Karkat is trying to keep Sollux safe while finding Gamzee, whom he believes to be in trouble rather than causing it.

When all is said and done, Karkat has pacified Gamzee and witnessed Sollux not only kill himself, but depart without major hesitation. All he has to do now is sit and wait for the meteor to reach it's destination. Unfortunately, traveling on the meteor is shown to be an incredibly boring endeavor. At first the kids and trolls are fully capable of being entertained with 'cultural exchange', but travel through paradox space becomes oppressively dull. He has time to think on and berate himself for all of the 'fuck ups' he's made in the past. He has time to drift away from all of his friends, including his supposed quadrant-mate. At the end of it all, Karkat's resolve is greatly diminished and his expression of emotions dulled.

Karkat is a popular guy for someone who flings around phrases like 'taint munching shitmaggot' and 'furbeast's gnarled and crusty nook'. His friendship with John is long forged over the course of the story. His interactions with John and Jade both open him up to a more cooperative approach to problem solving, though he's still reluctant to release any more control than strictly necessary. He clearly values these friendships, as can be seen when he expresses his concern to Dave that Jade and John won't like him when they finally meet. Dave begins his relationship with Karkat with mutual antagonism, but as time passes on the meteor they develop an uncannily perceptive understanding of one another.

Terezi and Karkat once shared a similarly perceptive intimacy, though they've since drifted. She was one of the first trolls to be aware of Karkat's blood color, and frequently gave him 'pep talks' of sorts as he struggled with leadership. He in turn greatly valued her friendship, going so far as to desire her in every quadrant 'like a desperate fool'. It is possible that Karkat's concept of quadrants is skewed, given his relationship to the Sufferer, who 'transcended quadrants' in his romance with the Disciple, but this has not been confirmed. After Terezi kills Vriska, her character takes a nose dive into self doubt, and Karkat fights to hold her up as she'd supported him, but if her relationship with Gamzee is any indication, he's failed, and he knows it.

Speaking of relationships with Gamzee and failure, Karkat knows all about that. Initially Karkat was dismissive of Gamzee, shoving away the 'best friend' label with pointed aggression that continued up to the events of murderstuck. Even when Gamzee contacts Karkat in a sober and unstable state, Karkat just tells him to 'go eat more sopor'. Once Karkat calms Gamzee and they become moirails the whole issue seems to be resolved. Karkat was successful in a relationship as a pacifying party and gained a steady and apparently mutual source of comfort. He clearly goes to Gamzee when he is upset, as he seeks solace in him when Sollux dies (again). However, as time goes on, their moirallegience deteriorates, though they remain partners with some level of mutual attention as the events of Openbound 3 unfold.

Karkat is extremely dedicated to keeping those around him happy. He will shout abuse, cut down, demean and otherwise shit all over anyone who has the misfortune of talking to him, but he'll also go out of his way to make sure that at the end of the day everyone else is as happy as possible. He honestly cares, though he often gets too caught up in his awful actions to properly express it or do anything productive at all. He's a good person at heart, once you clear away all of the rancid filth of temper and disgusting figures of speech. Still, his status as a pariah on his home planet and his past failures give extreme desperation to his actions. He needs the validation of a purpose, of accomplishing something that someone else couldn't. Even if that something is simply shutting Eridan up for five minutes.

A badass threshicutioner Karkat is not, but he'd like you to believe that. Initially, as he sat in his respitblock chatting (read: verbally pissing all over) with his friends, Karkat would have everyone, including himself, believe that he was hot shit - a literal freshly taken steaming turd. He asserted that he was the only one able to lead the group to victory. While how much he personally believed that statement is dubious, his friends were complicit enough to let him believe that they agreed. As time went on and the situation worsened, Karkat's fear became more obvious. From fainting when he witnessed Tavros's legs getting cut off to absolutely panicking at the onset of the events of murderstuck, Karkat's front of bravery has crumbled. It has gotten to the point in canon where he freely admits to being afraid, hiding behind Kanaya after being stabbed by Jane. He's being lifted from a point before that particular event, but his mental state isn't far from it. Throughout the entire plot, one of Karkat's main aims has been to keep himself and as many of his shitty friends as possible alive.

All of Karkat's friends suck. He's quick to bitch about it to anyone who will listen all, and he and Meenah have commiserated on the subject. Despite this, he's extremely dedicated to them. Karkat exhibits this when he attempts to bolster Terezi's confidence when she appears upset in Openbound 2. Even from the beginning, Karkat attempts to keep everyone together. He's lost some degree of faith in his own abilities, but his nature holds true. He can't stop caring.

Despite the fact that his society would kill him in an instant were his blood color to be revealed, Karkat yearns for its acceptance. He mentions to Meenah that he'd dreamed of being a Threshicutioner in Her Imperial Condescension's army. He ammends this to being in Meenah's army instead, even though it would jeopardize his life. This shows two things. One, Karkat's general fight and will to survive decreases as his time on the meteor drags on. He doesn't quite have a death wish, but he isn't holding on tooth and nail as he did when Noir was the main enemy. Two, he still seeks to prove himself. The leadership ploy, his relationships with Eridan and Gamzee, the urgency with which he holds his friends together, and most recently his pledge to Meenah all play into Karkat's attempts to purpose himself and then fulfill it.

Abilities/Weaknesses:
Karkat isn't particularly gifted with any powers beyond being absolutely awful to everyone, including himself. That isn't exactly a special ability though, just an unfortunate part of his character. Since his blood color is low on the hemospectrum, it's doubtful that he has any special strength, however he is shown to be skilled with a sickle. He probably wishes he still had it with him to threaten the more enthusiastic perverts.

As for weaknesses, Karkat could go on for days. He has the nastiest temper, easily set off at the most mild of transgressions. He has a compulsive need to be in control of any situation, even if he's under qualified and just as confused if not more so than everyone else involved. He's insecure about his blood color, his place in society, his ability to form functional interpersonal relationships and his general prospect of staying alive. Troll society is centered around violence, but the particularly gruesome sights will set Karkat into light-headedness or a fainting spell. He'll talk about the many potential horrific combinations of one's severed throat and a chainsaw, but the minute he sees it in action he's laying unconscious on the floor.

Karkat really REALLY likes to talk about how romance works, but when it comes to his own endeavors he's a fumbling mess. He has a great text-book knowledge of how the relationships of his species function, but he'll fade from black to 'friendship' with John and pine after every single one of Terezi's quadrants. Suffice it to say, despite his self-proclaimed impressive academic study of the issue, Karkat sucks at romance.

Two:
[There was absolutely no reason to be up this early. The hairy, putrid, recently penetrated ass-crack of dawn was not a sight Karkat welcomed. It was true that assholes penetrated with disgusting frequency were now a common sight, but that didn't make it any better.  He would have yawned, but at this point he was wary of a flying dick beast getting itself lodged in his throat.

As was ever increasingly typical, he'd hardly slept. The nights when obnoxious moans threatened to anally thrash his ears were welcomed in the face of the other ways sex managed to keep him up. Pun not intended, go stick your dick in a jar full of bees.

Karkat would probably join you in that, too, if it meant he could avoid any further discomfort. It wasn't as if he was forced to participate, that would be too easy. Instead, his stupid shitty idiot mind decided to just imagine what it would be like to join in. He'd picture himself in an alarmingly large amount of compromised positions but end up too embarrassed about it to act on anything.

He was trapped in a land of rampant, unbridled, nasty, extreme and all encompassing sex and still the only action he could get was his hand.

At this point, it was a morning ritual.]
